Your guide to candid wedding photos that feel natural, not forced.

If I had a dollar for every time someone said “We’re so awkward in photos!” I could probably retire. The majority of couples I’ve worked with feel this way, and that’s totally okay! Having candid wedding photos isn’t about perfection or being a model. It’s about trust, comfort, and a little bit of guidance. Here are 5 tips that will help you actually enjoy being photographed.

Choose a Photographer You Feel Comfortable With

A natural connection to your photographer is so important. It’s not just about the photographer’s photos, but how they make you feel. Especially on your wedding day when they’ll be around you most of the day.

When you trust your photographer, you can truly let your guard down and be yourself. Which allows candid wedding photos to happen naturally. And this is exactly why it is so important for me to get to know my couples ahead of the wedding day!

Focus on Each Other. Not on Posing or Even the Camera

Real, genuine connection is so much better than the perfect pose. Every. Single. Time.

I don’t want you to stress over how to stand, where to put your hands, or be focused on where the camera is. Instead, think about each other and how happy you are together. Chat over your excitement that you’re finally married. Laugh about how your vows sounded exactly the same. Enjoy a quiet embrace like it’s any other day.

Embrace Movement in Photos

Movement is everything! Rather than stiff, uncomfortable posing, movement loosens nerves. It leads to natural, candid wedding photos that could never be staged.

Types of movement I love to incorporate include walking (lots of walking!), dancing, running around. As well as, a gentle caress, a big hug, and more.

I’ll guide you with gentle direction while letting your unique personalities. I never want to force you into something that doesn’t feel like you, so this is all tailored to you. Which brings me back to why getting to know you is so important.

Wear Something That Feels Like You

When you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing, it shows. Whether it’s your wedding dress or engagement session outfit, feeling your best is everything.

Maybe you’re more laidback and not too formal, don’t force yourself into a formal gown. If you like classic fashions, stick to that over trends. If you like to get dressed up, go all out! Choose outfits that feel like you on your best day, whatever that may look like.

And if you’re feeling stuck for engagement session outfits, don’t worry! I help all of my clients with their styling. When we chat about your session, I’m also looking to get a sense of your personal style. From there, I’ll provide you with a few outfit ideas (with links as well!) based on your style and your session location. And you can always text or email me with what you’re considering if you’re unsure!

Remember the Bigger Picture

Your photos aren’t about being perfect, they are about capturing your story. I always say there is beauty in the imperfect, because that is what makes it yours. The little in-between moments, the way you laugh together, the way you look at each other.

It’s totally okay (and normal) to feel a little awkward at first. But that starts to fade away when you let yourself be present in the moment, to feel rather than perform.

So let me reassure you, you don’t have to be “good at photos” to get great, candid wedding photos. My job is to create a space where you feel comfortable enough to just be yourselves. And those great photos will happen. I’m here to guide you every step of the way.
