Wedding guest outfits for men and women and dress codes explained

So you’ve been invited to a wedding, but now you’re wondering what are the proper wedding guest outfits? And what do these different types of attire even mean?

We’ll dive into what each means. And also give you inspiration, whether you’re shopping in your closet or for something new. Don’t feel pressured to buy a new outfit for a single event, you can consider renting instead. Companies like Rent the Runway, Nuuly and Men’s Wearhouse are perfect for special occasions, like being a wedding guest.

Check the Dress Code

The first thing you’ll need to know when choosing your wedding guest outfits is the dress code. Your invitation should indicate the dress code, whether that’s Black Tie, Semi-formal, or Cocktail attire. You may also see Black Tie Optional. If your invitation does not indicate a specific dress code, it is cocktail attire.

Couples tend to include questions around attire on their wedding website. If you’re unsure, always reach out to the couple in advance.

Consider the Season

You’ll want to consider the venue and the season of the wedding you’re attending and choose your attire accordingly. Soft pastels are perfect for a spring or summer wedding. While jewel tones are great for a fall or winter wedding. A linen fabric or sun dress is appropriate for a beach wedding. Neutrals are perfect any time of year. A long sleeve dress or the addition of a jacket are perfect for an outdoor wedding in the fall.

Keep in mind, women should avoid wearing anything white or light colored. Avoid white, cream, taupe, light pink, light grey. You don’t want to take the spotlight off of the beautiful bride!

Black Tie

A black tie event is one that is a formal, evening event. Women are expected to wear a floor length gown. Additionally, women can opt for elegant pantsuits if that is a more comfortable shape. Men are expected to wear a tuxedo. A black bowtie, black vest or cummerbund, are also recommended.

Black Tie Optional

Black tie optional loosens up the formality a bit. Women are still expected to wear a floor length gown, fancy cocktail dress, or dressy pantsuit. A tuxedo isn’t required, but can still be worn. If men choose to wear a suit, it’s best to wear a dark formal suit.

Cocktail

Cocktail attire is a step up from semi-formal, which we’ll discuss next. This is the most popular choice when it comes to wedding attire. Cocktail attire balances elegant and comfortable. Instead of a floor length dress, women can opt for a midi length, tea length, or knee length dress. Cocktail attire weddings drop the requirement for men to wear a tux. A suit and tie should be worn.

Semi-Formal or Dressy Casual

Semi-formal gives guests flexibility on comfort, just be sure not to dress to casual. Women can wear below the knee dresses, slip dresses, a dressy skirt and top, or an elevated pant suit. For men, a dress shirt, slacks, and an optional tie will work.

Casual

Casual attire usually aligns with an outdoor or beach wedding. While the event is more laidback, this does not mean jeans, shorts, flip flops, or T-shirts. For casual weddings, women can wear a sundress or mini dress. While men can choose dress pants or khakis with a collared shirt.

I hope this helps you choose your next wedding guest outfit and that you have a blast attending your next wedding!
