How to build more space into your wedding photography timeline for real moments to happen

You don’t have to rush through your wedding day like it’s some sort of checklist. This post will help guide you in creating a wedding photography timeline that allows for meaningful moments to happen naturally. Because the ones that actually make you feel something usually happen in the in between.

Why real moments need breathing room

More often than not, the best moments aren’t ones that are scripted or on the timeline. We can’t just schedule ‘time for candids’ and think something will happen. We can, however, plan for breathing room.

When you’re rushing from one event to the next, it often causes stress, tension, and most importantly, missed moments. When you aren’t rushed, you have the capacity to relax, to feel and take in everything around you. and that feeling shows up in your photos in these moments.

These are often forgotten when planning a timeline

Hair and makeup may take longer than you think. So listen to your beauty team’s time recommendations. I even recommend building in a little buffer between when beauty finishes and the next thing begins. If anything, it leaves room for a dance party!

Travel time between locations can often be underestimated. Once you factor in gathering belongings, getting everyone on the bus/in the car, then settling in, travel time balloons. And also, being in the Baltimore/DC area, you sometimes never know what traffic snafus can occur. So plan for more time (sometimes double) what you may need.

Family photos can drag on if unprepared. I always always recommend building a list ahead of time so that you can move efficiently while also ensuring every combination you want in captured. And always make sure your family knows when and where to meet for photos!

Most importantly, you need time to pause, reflect, slow down. Rather than just being rushed from one part of the day to the next. Enjoy time with your family, friends, each other.

Where to build in space, wedding photography timeline ideas

Getting Ready

  • Add 30 minutes to simply hang with your people without any pressure
  • Plan time to exchange gifts or read letters without an audience
  • Plan time to eat so you are fueled through the rest of the day

First Look

  • No need to rush through this and into portraits! Soak it all in
  • Take a walk together, share a drink, share private vows. You let your media team know when you’re ready to move into portraits.

Before the Ceremony

  • 30-45 minutes of chill time before the ceremony makes all the difference.
  • Allow yourself time to sit, have a snack, hangout with your friends while your guests are arriving

Post Ceremony

  • Plan time for yourselves before any photos or joining cocktail hour
  • Plan to join cocktail hour simply to mingle – no pressure of photos involved

Reception

  • Don’t pack it with a ton of events. Keep it simple with toasts, dances, and cake cutting so then you can chat with guests and bust a move on the dance floor
  • Plan for a time to sneak away for a few minutes just you two. (with or without your media team) Whether you enjoy the sunset together or have a cocktail in a quiet room together.

My approach to photographing real moments

Your wedding day isn’t a photo shoot, it’s an experience. And my approach to photographing your day reflects that. I’m not here to orchestrate your day. I’m here to observe it, gently guide when needed, and preserve your true, natural connection with each other.

Before your wedding day we’ll collaborate on building your wedding photography timeline in a way that considers everything important to you while giving you space to allow real moments to happen.

While yes, I’ll offer direction when you need it. Like guiding where the light is best to how to stand so you feel comfortable and connected rather than awkward. I never want to force you into stiff poses or pull you out of a moment because the timeline says so.

My goal isn’t perfection. My goal for you is presence, connection, quality time. So that when you look back through your wedding memories you feel it all over again.

Let’s create a day for real moments

The truth is this: your day isn’t a photo shoot or about checking boxes. It’s about feeling every moment. When you give yourself space to breath into moments, it becomes a day you’ll never forget.
