Couples sometimes will ask me if an engagement session is really needed. I totally understand their questioning it. They had a friend take some photos for them. They hate getting their photos taken. They are so awkward in front of the camera. They feel too busy.
All of these are totally valid.
But let me tell you why an engagement session with your photographer is so important.
You’ll get to work with your photographer prior to your wedding day.
Your engagement session is a time for you to connect with your photographer on a more personal level. There is a lot that goes on the day of your wedding. Engagement sessions are much calmer so you can truly slow down and connect with your photographer.
Then when your photographer shows up on your wedding day, you’ll already know them! Maybe you’ve been connecting over the past year (or more) so they feel like a friend. This makes everything feel easier and less stressful.
2. Helps get out any awkwardness you may feel.
I’ve been there, being photographed by a stranger can feel uncomfortable at first. Being photographed in general can feel uncomfortable! You’ll start to shake off these feelings during your engagement session! The more you do it the more comfortable you will feel.
You’ll get a sense of how your photographer flows through posing and communicates with you. Come the wedding day, you’ll feel like you know how to pose for your portraits. (which just makes everything feel smoother).
3. More images!
Who doesn’t want more photos with their future husband?! Now you have a reason to brag about your fiancé on social media, not that you need one!
You can use your images in multiple ways for the wedding. Most commonly, for your save the dates and wedding website. But you can also use them throughout your decor! Work with your photographer to create an album of your engagement session that can be used as your guest book. Use framed prints to welcome your guests.
Not to mention you can decorate your walls with your beautiful faces! Start creating your gallery wall in your living room starting with your engagement and adding on as new memories are made and milestones are reached.
4. Memories made
Speaking of memories! If you aren’t super big on taking photos, discuss with your photographer how you can make it more fun! A lot of times, our generation has a negative mindset towards photos because we think about the uncomfortable department store studio sessions we were forced to do growing up. (I feel your pain!) But it’s 2023 and photo sessions are very different! They are a time for you to make memories with your person, grab some drinks, go roller skating, get some ice cream, walk your dog, whatever you love doing together you can incorporate into your session. Have your session fit YOU!
Let me know in the comments why you’re excited for your engagement session!
Until next time, xoxo Nicole
